Jill Liddington: Winning Votes For Women in Halifax and Beyond

Jill

We were delighted to have the renowned local writer and historian Jill Liddington join us in the shop yesterday evening. Jill is interested in women’s history with her main research focusing on the Votes for Women story. Jill’s involvement with the local aspects of the story started when she moved next door to the mill where Annie Kenney worked and have lead to her being heavily involved with this year’s Vote 100 celebrations.

The event was a sell out and we even managed to squeeze in a few people who turned up on the off chance. Clearly many people wanted to know more about the local suffragettes.

Jill gave a fascinating talk about the Votes for Women campaign, looking at the contributions of both the suffragists and the suffragettes. As well as giving an overview of the national campaign and snapshots of important events she also discussed the involvement of local women such as Dora Thewlis and Lavena Saltonstall. Jill’s book Rebel Girls covers the stories of these and many other northern campaigners.

Jill had several pictures to illustrate her talk, including ones of street processions and banners. Everyone was interested in the copy of the census records of 1911 which showed a married man with a child at an address with a mysteriously missing wife – a census evader. Jill’s book Vanishing For The Vote tells the story of the women who boycotted the census as they did not count as full citizens.

After the talk Jill took questions from the floor and did a book signing.

Many thanks to Jill for such an interesting evening and thank you to all who came along to listen.

Tour de Yorkshire

Tour de Yorkshire 2018

On Sunday 6th May 2018 The Piece Hall hosted the start of Stage 4 of the Tour de Yorkshire, ‘The Yorkshire Terrier’.

The weather was glorious and The Piece Hall looked amazing with it’s honey coloured stone standing out against the blue sky and festooned with bright yellow bunting. It was was packed with people and everyone seemed to be having a lovely day. It was great publicity for Halifax and The Piece hall, and I even got a chance to plug the bookshop on Radio Leeds. There were cheers as the cyclists arrived and paraded round the courtyard, before being introduced on the stage and then lining up at the start. As the crowd’s countdown sent them on their way, a big screen let us follow their progress through Yorkshire and the Calder Valley.  The TDY staging was cleared away and the courtyard filled with music and entertainers for the afternoon. Here are some pictures to give a flavour of a fantastic day.

Book Launch – Light After Light by Vicky Gatehouse

all 3 poets 3

Last night we were delighted to host the launch of  Vicky Gatehouse’s first poetry pamphlet, Light After Light. Vicky is a local poet; her work has been widely published in magazines and anthologies. Light After Light contains twenty poems exploring science and art.

Vicky 2

Light After Light is published by Valley Press – an independent publishing house based in Scarborough. Assistant Publisher Jo Haywood attended and introduced Vicky and Valley Press.

Jo Heywood

Vicky read a couple of poems, giving us insight into the inspiration behind each one. We had a full house, all listening intently. The Geese of Sowerby Bridge made many people recall their experiences of cross geese blocking their way.

Vicky was supported by two other Valley Press poets – Wendy Pratt and Jo Brandon.

Wendy Pratt

Wendy read three poems from her latest book Gifts The Mole Gave Me. I particularly enjoyed Starlings, a wonderful poem about her mother’s conversations with her siblings that conjured up bird song and flight.

Jo Brandon

Jo read two poems from her book The Learned Goose and one new poem. As an ex Brownie I enjoyed Girlguiding which captures the Brownie enrolment ceremony perfectly but with a sadness born of not being the same as the others.

After a short break Vicky read a further selection of poems from her book. I was thrilled that Vicky read Flame Test after I had mentioned that it strongly resonated with me due to my science and education background. Brace bought back memories of embarrassment and only being able to eat soggy weetabix, experiences of a brace wearing bought to life perfectly.

Vicky then met with the audience and was kept busy signing her books.

It was a super evening. Thanks to all who attended.

Dales writers rule!

There’s nothing like escaping to the  Yorkshire Dales, either in real life or through the pages of a book! We’ve been lucky enough to have two wonderful writers visit us this month, who both set their stories against the backdrop of the Yorkshire landscape.

Mary Jayne Baker visited us to sign her new Love in the Dales novel, A Bicycle Made for Two. A charming rural romance set against the excitement of the Grand Depart, a great read if you can’t wait for the Tour De Yorkshire Start at The Piece Hall on the 6th May.

Julia Chapman also paid us a wonderful visit to sign her third novel in The Dales Detective Series, Date with Mystery. This cosy crime series has been in our bestseller list since we opened!

We have limited numbers of signed copies of both titles available – While stock lasts!

Here are Julia and Mary, with copies of each other’s books!
