Cream tea with Alexander McCall Smith

Last weekend we were lucky enough to welcome Alexander McCall Smith when he joined us at The Piece Hall for Cream Tea and conversation. A full house and a wonderful atmosphere as our audience enjoyed a beautiful home-made cream tea served by our friends at The Deli, while listening to a mix of poetry, readings and anecdotes, covering his life and work as  he celebrates 20 years of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.

Director of the Huddersfield Literature Festival Michelle Hodgson was interviewing, and together they  discussed Alexander’s new books including the stand alone novel The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse, his poetry anthology A Gathering, and the latest in the No. 1 Ladies’ series. He also talked about his children’s books and there was a special moment when Alexander bought and signed a copy of this latest children’s book for a young fan.

He finished the afternoon with a browse in the shop, and left us with a wonderful quote…

“what a pleasure to go into a bookshop like this! Temptation upon temptation! And what a pleasure to yield…” Alexander McCall Smith,  The Book Corner 2018

Tour de Yorkshire

Tour de Yorkshire 2018

On Sunday 6th May 2018 The Piece Hall hosted the start of Stage 4 of the Tour de Yorkshire, ‘The Yorkshire Terrier’.

The weather was glorious and The Piece Hall looked amazing with it’s honey coloured stone standing out against the blue sky and festooned with bright yellow bunting. It was was packed with people and everyone seemed to be having a lovely day. It was great publicity for Halifax and The Piece hall, and I even got a chance to plug the bookshop on Radio Leeds. There were cheers as the cyclists arrived and paraded round the courtyard, before being introduced on the stage and then lining up at the start. As the crowd’s countdown sent them on their way, a big screen let us follow their progress through Yorkshire and the Calder Valley.  The TDY staging was cleared away and the courtyard filled with music and entertainers for the afternoon. Here are some pictures to give a flavour of a fantastic day.

Shop ready and decorated with Yorkshire Roses as the crowds build up.

Some book choices for young cycling enthusiasts!

Time a quick interview with Nick Ahad on Radio Leeds.

The competitors arrive.

Fans of all ages!

Nearly ready to go.

The after-party! Jiving on a sunny afternoon.
